Columbus Naginata Dojo

Bringing Atarashii Naginata to the Midwest

About Columbus Naginata

Instructor Jessica Wilson began her study of Atarashii Naginata in 2007 under Youko Yamao-sensei at the Senshinkan in Osaka, Japan, reaching the rank of 1-kyu. She then moved to Chicago to pursue a PhD, but with the lack of nearby dojos and practice partners in the Midwest she struggled to train consistently, occasionally travelling to Indiana to train with Takami Tanner-sensei. Upon moving to Boston, she joined the East Coast Naginata Federation and finally settled into the Cambridge Naginata Club with GNYNF. With the help of a small village, Jessica finally attained the rank of 2-dan in 2023. Having now landed in Columbus, Jessica hopes to bring Atarashii Naginata to the Ohio area, and most importantly, provide accessible resources to naginata practitioners in the Midwest.

  • Naginata is the modern Japanese martial art of the halberd that has its origins from the samurai class of feudal Japan. The discipline has evolved into a modern, competitive martial art, involving the skills of forms (kata), full-contact sparring with armor, and choreography. Although naginata is rare, the art is practiced world wide by practitioners of all different ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

  • While personal equipment is not required for participation, most naginata practitioners end up buying their own equipment.

  • Classes are regularly held at the Tuttle Park Community Center. Please register for a session via the Community Center page, or reach out to us directly via the form below.
