Hi! I’m Katie
I’m an educator, martial artist, and lifelong explorer of movement, beauty, and curiosity. I teach physical education, coach athletes, and guide students in discovering the harmony of mind, body, and presence.
I began practicing naginata not as a competitive pursuit, but as a way to heal—drawn to it through my grandmother, and ultimately discovering it at a moment when I needed grounding, focus, and movement with meaning. What began as therapy grew into a lifelong discipline.
I am a seven-time U.S. Women’s Individual Champion and have represented the United States internationally at the World Naginata Championships. Alongside competition, I have founded and mentored multiple university naginata clubs and continue to teach, coach, and advocate for the art both on and off the floor.
My approach to martial arts embraces strength and softness equally. I am interested in naginata not only as a combative form, but as part of a whole life—one that includes aesthetics, tradition, cultural exchange, and personal expression. I believe martial arts can be elegant, feminine, and joyful without losing rigor or depth.
Outside of training, I play the koto and study the guqin, practice calligraphy and pottery, grow rare tropical plants, and collect objects that bring beauty into daily life—often in shades of pink. I have a soft spot for pink—notebooks, accessories, coffee cups, and Lululemon alike—-and a love of thoughtful, playful shopping. Each object, each hobby, each pursuit is a way of exploring the world, color, and life. These pursuits are not separate from budō, but extensions of the same attention, care, and discipline.
Through teaching and practice, I hope to share a vision of martial arts that honors tradition while allowing space for individuality, femininity, and modern life.
I move through the world seeking balance between discipline and delight, precision and play, strength and softness.
